President Medina inaugurates Mirador Norte-La Zurza Wastewater Treatment Plant


SANTO DOMINGO.- President Danilo Medina inaugurated this Tuesday the Wastewater Treatment Plant with which it is intended to clean up the Ozama and Isabela rivers, which will benefit some 450,000 inhabitants of greater Santo Domingo.

According to the director of the Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewerage Corporation (Caasd), Alejandro Montás, explained that this work is the largest made by the Government of President Danilo Medina in terms of preventive and environmental health.

The plant will treat the waste and industrial waters of 21 sectors of the National District and Santo Domingo.

As complementary works, ten wastewater treatment plants were rehabilitated, of which nine discharge into the Ozama and Isabela rivers.

“This plant is equipped according to the highest quality indicators. It has a sludge treatment line through anaerobic digestion that will allow the production of organic fertilizer and methane gas, for a total use of all the by-products of the treatment, which makes it a sustainable work with high social and environmental profitability ", Montás said during the inauguration.

The inauguration was a brief act in which President Danilo Medina did not have a speech.

The wastewater treatment plant had a cost of 7.7 billion pesos and will produce 138 cubic meters per day of organic fertilizer for agricultural use and soil improvement.

It will produce biogas that will be used for the generation of energy required in the plant, and it will collect 10 cubic meters of sand daily, in addition to fats.

The station has a 240 linear meter bridge through which wastewater is transported, and a collector that runs from Jacobo Majluta avenue to the Mirador Norte.

This project was carried out through a turnkey contract, through financing with Deutsche Bank, S.A.E., Sociedad Anónima Española, for the first phase. The second stage will benefit the Guaricanos, Villa Mella and Sabana Perdida sectors, in Santo Domingo Norte, which includes the Phase I and II Interceptor Sanitary Sewer project.
