The people of La Zurza live hardships due to the construction of the CAASD

SANTO DOMINGO .- "Here when it is not the dust that is killing us, it is the mud that is eating us, sometimes we last up to four days without water, because the devices break the pipes, or we are left in the dark because they knock down the wiring."

This drama, described by Carmelita Diloné, portrays part of the vicissitudes experienced by the 50 families relocated to the banks of the Isabela River since the beginning of the Santo Domingo Metro, to make way for what would become Avenida del Río.

Today these people have worsened their situation with the construction of the pumping substation of the Mirador Norte La Zurza treatment plant by the Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewerage Corporation (CAASD).

Deterioration vs. health

In addition to the progressive deterioration experienced by the “retreaded hovels” with old pieces of wood and zinc, impoverished families are forced to tolerate every day the dust raised by the heavy equipment used in the creation of the water processing station.

Diloné, like other residents of the sector located in the vicinity of the Francisco J. Peynado bridge, assures that they have abused its conditions. In addition to "cornering" them between the wall of the new construction and the river, they took away the small green space or recreation park that the community had.

“They deceived us, they have left us abandoned… we complain and they don't listen to us. The worst thing is that the children are getting sick every day from the dust and we have to drink buckets of water to calm the dust, ”said Héctor de los Santos.

Víctor Manuel Portorreal, spokesman for the Management Committee for Development of La Zurza, said that of the total of 178 families evicted from the flooded part of the river, a group of 81 families were benefited with apartments, 50 are in the temporary houses and the rest walk in house of friends and relatives with letters of pledges of decent housing. They await their relocation to improve the quality of life.
