Entity suggests Zurza ecotourism corridor to Nuevo Domingo Savio
Fundsazurza urges President Luis Abinader to follow Perimetral avenue left the Opret
An ecological corridor from La Zurza to La Ciénega, with the expansion of Perimetral Avenue to connect it with the Nuevo Domingo Savio project, would be the salvation of the Ozama and Isabela rivers, in addition to turning the area into a tourist attraction.
The proposal is from the La Zurza Environmental Sanitation Foundation, made up of 17 organizations from the Zurza sector, as well as the Federation of Neighborhood Councils, churches and others within the Zurza Comprehensive Development Plan (PEDEZURZA).
German Herrera and Julián Mosquea, executive director and president of FUNDSAZURZA, estimate that the project would rescue part of the so-called Green Belt of Santo Domingo.
They recall that in 1993, then-president Joaquín Balaguer declared a large part of the margins of the rivers designated as part of the city's Green Belt, due to its richness in biodiversity and wetlands.
Herrara cites six sources of water or springs that exist in the area, three of them in La Zurza, one in Capotillo, one in Simón Bolívar and two in Gualey, which according to laboratory studies their waters have very little contamination.
It is a pity that all this wealth on the banks of the rivers has been lost, people have invaded everything, so it would be a great contribution for the city if the government rescue the margins of these aquifers with an avenue that connects from the Francisco J. Peynado Bridge to Juan Bosch Bridge, ”he says.
However, he estimates that despite the occupations it is still possible to recover the existing spaces with the pools or waterwheels that can be turned into tourist attractions along with the cleaning of the rivers.
For this reason, he suggests to President Luis Abinader that he resume the Perimetral Avenue project that the Office for the Reordering of Transportation (OPRET) started more than 15 years ago and that he abandoned on the border between La Zurza and Capotillo. In a part of the rescued area, the National Police (PN) builds a pley, where dozens of children and adolescents practice baseball.
There is also a field of the Club Nuestro Esfuerzo, for sports and cultural activities, and the Fundsazurza is building a model recycling plant, especially plastics, to process them and prevent them from reaching Isabela.
He hopes that the Nuevo Domingo Savio project, which recovers 300 meters of land from the Ozama upwards, will also be carried out in La Zurza and other neighborhoods on the banks of the Isabela, with the relocation of the few families that still remain in the area.

At the same time, he suggests that the fronts of the houses in the sector be changed so that they face the Isabela, not the back as they currently are. La Zurza is a neighborhood of 48 thousand inhabitants, in 1.5 square kilometers.
